How to Plan Your First Disney World Vacation: Start with Your Vacation Style
Planning your first Walt Disney World vacation should be exciting.
But if you've spent any time researching online, it probably feels more overwhelming than magical.
Everyone has advice.
Your coworker says you have to stay at a Deluxe Resort. Your neighbor insists you need at least six park days. A Facebook group tells you Lightning Lane is a waste of money, while TikTok says it's essential. One blog recommends table-service dining for every meal. Another says quick-service is the only way to go.
After a while, it starts to feel like everyone has the "right" answer—and somehow all of those answers contradict each other.
Here's the truth:
Most of that advice isn't wrong. It's just not necessarily right for your family.
And I believe that's where first-time Disney planning goes off track.
Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for you if:
You're planning your first Disney World vacation.
You're overwhelmed by conflicting advice online.
You want to make confident decisions instead of constantly second-guessing yourself.
You want a vacation that fits your family—not someone else's.
If that sounds like you, you're in the right place.
The Biggest Mistake First-Time Disney Families Make
When families first start planning, they usually ask questions like:
Which Disney resort should we stay at?
How many park days do we need?
Is Lightning Lane worth the extra cost?
Which restaurants should we book?
Should we add Park Hopper?
Those are all important questions.
They're just not the first question.
Imagine decorating a house before you've decided how you're actually going to live in it.
Would you build a gourmet kitchen if your family eats out every night? Would you turn an extra bedroom into a home office if what you really needed was a playroom?
Probably not.
You'd first decide what kind of life you wanted your home to support. Then you'd make decisions that matched those priorities.
Planning a Disney vacation works exactly the same way.
Before you choose your resort, decide how many park days you need, compare Lightning Lane, or start making dining reservations...
Ask yourself one simple question:
What kind of vacation are we actually trying to create?
That single question makes every other planning decision easier.
Why Disney Advice Feels So Confusing
Have you ever noticed something strange?
Two families can visit Disney World during the exact same week and come home with completely different opinions.
One family says,
"Five park days wasn't nearly enough."
Another says,
"Honestly, by Day 4 we were exhausted."
Who's right?
Both of them.
Because they weren't trying to create the same vacation.
One family measures success by how many attractions they experienced. The other measures success by how relaxed they felt when they came home.
Neither family is wrong.
They're simply measuring different things.
That's why Disney advice can feel so confusing.
Most people aren't giving bad advice—they're giving advice based on their priorities.
The challenge is figuring out which advice actually fits yours.
Two Families. Same Week. Completely Different Disney Vacations.
This reminds me of two families I recently helped plan.
Both were traveling to Walt Disney World during Halloween season.
Both had similar overall vacation budgets.
Both wanted an unforgettable trip.
Yet their vacations couldn't have looked more different.
One family chose to stay at a Deluxe Resort. Instead of maximizing every park day, they planned three park days, purchased tickets to Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and intentionally built time into their schedule to enjoy their resort, relax by the pool, and simply slow down.
The second family made almost the exact opposite decision.
They stayed at Disney's All-Star Resorts, purchased six park days, added the Disney Dining Plan, and wanted as much time inside the parks as possible.
So...
Which family planned the better Disney vacation?
Honestly?
Neither.
They both planned the right vacation.
Here's what's interesting.
If you looked at these vacations side by side, you might assume the family staying at the Deluxe Resort spent significantly more money.
They didn't.
The total vacation cost was actually very similar.
The difference wasn't how much they spent. It was where they chose to spend it.
One family invested more of their budget in their resort and a special-ticket event because they wanted a slower, more relaxed vacation.
The other invested more in additional park days and dining because spending as much time as possible in the parks was their priority.
If I had switched their plans, neither family would have been as happy.
The family who wanted to slow down would have felt rushed.
The family who wanted six park days would probably have felt like they missed out.
Different priorities. Similar budgets. Completely different vacations.
And that's exactly the point.
There isn't one "perfect" Disney vacation.
There is only the vacation that's perfect for your family.
Stop Asking “What's Best?"
Instead, start asking:
"What's best for us?"
That one small shift changes almost every Disney planning decision.
Instead of asking:
"What's the best Disney resort?"
Ask:
"What resort supports the vacation we want to have?"
Instead of asking:
"How many park days does everyone recommend?"
Ask:
"How much park time fits the experience we want?"
Suddenly there isn't one correct answer. There are simply better answers for different families.
My Philosophy on Disney Planning
After helping many families plan Disney vacations, I've noticed something. The happiest families aren't always the ones who spend the most money. They aren't always the ones who stay the longest. They aren't always the ones who ride the most attractions.
They're the families whose plans matched their priorities.
When your expectations and your plans are aligned, Disney feels magical. When they aren't, it's easy to come home wondering why your vacation didn't feel like everyone else's on social media.
That's why I don't start planning with resorts
.
Or park tickets
Or restaurants.
Or Lightning Lane.
I start with your family.
What excites you?
What stresses you out?
What kind of memories are you hoping to make?
Answer those questions first and everything else becomes easier.
Discover Your Disney Vacation Style
Over the years, I've noticed that families naturally tend to fall into a handful of vacation styles.
Some love maximizing every minute, while others prefer a slower pace. Some build their trip around unforgettable family moments. Others are happiest discovering unique experiences or adding a few special touches that make their vacation feel extra magical.
None of those approaches are wrong. They're simply different.
